Home > News : "More roads and water for Tarrafal de São Nicolau "

31/08/2005: Work on the construction of a road linking Cabeçalinho to Palhal will begin in the first half of September, according to the president of the commission charged with setting up the administrative infrastructure of the newly-created municipality of Tarrafal de São Nicolau, António Soares. Soares also announced that financing has already been secured for the project intended to provide home water hookups in the town of Tarrafal.

The road connecting Cabeçalinho to Palhal will cost a total of 10 million escudos and is being financed through a program contract signed by the central government and the Tarrafal de São Nicolau installation commission. The road will have an extension of six kilometers, and its construction will be able to employ all of Palhal’s 60 residents.

The project is the object of considerable expectations. “The road between Cabeçalinho and Palhal has been a longstanding demand of the population of this zone, ever since 1975, when Cape Verde gained independence,” says Soares.

The president of the installation commission adds that work on the project for the utilization of water from the Mané Bau spring is also expected to begin soon. The National Water Resource Institute will finance the equipment for the exploration of the spring, while the Luxembourg Cooperation Agency will finance the construction of the system used to pipe the water into the town of Tarrafal.
