25/04/2005: |
The town of Pombas, the seat of the municipality of Paúl, will host a meeting of mayors of the municipalities that are part of the Project for the Re-Valorization of Patrimony in Rural Macaronesia (MACARURAL). The meeting, according to Paúl municipal chamber president Américo Silva, will be attended by the European Union delegate in Cape Verde. The project is aimed at stimulating the economic growth of member municipalities, and is financed by Brussels as part of the EU’s Interreg III program, which ends in December 2006.
According to Américo Silva, Interreg will be substituted by the program known as “Vizinhança” (“Neighborhood” or “Neighborliness”), which will begin in January 2007. The information was announced during the meeting of the Confederation of Municipalities of Ultra-Peripheral Regions of the European Union and Cape Verde, which took place between April 14 and 16 in the city of Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores.
The National Association of Municipalities of Cape Verde (ANMCV) and individual municipalities will have the opportunity, within the framework of “Vizinhança,” to present “physical” construction projects, rather than just training programs, as has been the case until the present.
The Azores meeting was also used to approve a Declaration of Support for a special status for Cape Verde with the European Union. According to Silva, who is also the president of the ANMCV, the declaration was unanimously approved by the representatives of the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Guadalupe, Martinique and Cape Verde.
MACARURAL is made up of the municipalities of Calheta and Velas (Azores), Lobos (Madeira) Aguimes, Valle Hermoso and Guimar (Canary Islands) and Paúl, the only Cape Verdean municipality to adhere to the project. In addition to economic promotion, MACARURAL fosters “studies and inventories of patrimonial resources,” “technical projects for the recuperation of architectural patrimony” and “museum projects.”
The construction of scenic overlooks, the “House of Grogue” museum and the restoration of traditional houses in the localities of Fundo do Café and Chã de Erva are some of the projects currently under way in Paúl within the framework of MACARURAL, which can be visited on the Internet at www.macaronesiarural.com.
Macaronesia is the name that has been given to the group of archipelagos in the northern Atlantic Ocean and is made up of Cape Verde, the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores. |
